After almost 70 years Wonder Woman has finally been given a make-over which was revealed in issue 600 of of her comic book.

The change comes just in time for writer J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) and artists Don Kramer and Michael Babinski to join in on the new Wonder Woman story.

Not only are fans given a new writer and 2 new artists (yet well established), we're also given a new, alternate back story for Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman which leaves her fighting for survival in an urban setting. Read more about it in DC's official blog post.

lol Yay!

I'm sad though. The initial reaction is fairly negative. A lot of people complain that it's a Black Canary rip off (costume) and that it's a little late for a background change.

The main focus seems to be just updating the character though. The setting 70 years ago wasn't really one we're seeing today.

Wonder Womans Wikipedia says:

Initially, Wonder Woman is an Amazon champion who wins the right to return Steve Trevor—a United States intelligence officer whose plane had crashed on the Amazons' isolated island homeland—to "Man's World," and fight the evil of the Nazis and other crime.

While one could argue that this could easily be replaced with the USA's "war on terror" everything from womens role in the home and work place, to clothing and technology have changed or advanced.

Over the years, there have been attempts to change the story, the origin, or sometimes just the costume of icons such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Everytime this happens, a bunch of traditionalists come out of the woodwork and cry foul. The big problem with this is that many of these traditionalists haven't picked up a comic book in probably 20 years or more. The reason DC tries to make changes is simple. You've got to try anything to help boost sales. But here is where DC differs from Marvel.

Marvel just keeps rebooting their characters to the point that nobody really gives a damn anymore. They don't get negative reactions anymore. They just get "Dr. Doom is dead? Yeah yeah whatever blah blah blah". But when DC fans react negatively, then DC usually tries to find a way to put the old costume back on or the old origin back in place and yet somehow save face at the same time. If Wonder Woman's new costume really does continue to get negative feedback, then expect to see the star spangled panties again by sometime during 2011. I've seen them do this before. Most likely they will do it again.

I know, and it's sad. This look IS great and modern, despite the 90's comments on it.

90's comment, like, "Madonna called, she wants her jacket back!"??

I like it, even though I'll miss the star spangled panties...

lol well that is a good example, but most of the comments I've read are about her looking like she stepped out of a 90's comic book.

Although, I think 10-20 year old fashion is better than 60-70 year old fashion don't you think? lol

in a recent issue of Brave & The Bold, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, and Batgirl went to karaoke night in their civilian identities. If Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) wears that jacket and sings "Into The Groove", I certainly have no problem with it.

I think super hero women shout ooze sex ! Thats what makes them sell ! This redo sucks and make her look like a teenage bar star
-vv-

All action women usually are popular if they dress like a Porn Star but fight like Mike Tyson ! (Old Wonder Woman and Emma Frost)

Or super dark and mysterious and have that freaky naughty look (Dark Angel and Cat Woman)

One way or another they have to have ubber sex appeal and this new version definitely does not ! She has to make you want her to kick your ass and then rip your clothes off and look sexy the whole time ! Chicks that look like Rosie O Donnell could fuck shit up too but could you honestly want to subscribe to this ??

This made me throw up in mouth a bit

Female super heroes "ooze" sex appeal because they were meant to appeal to a male audience in the beginning of modern comics. Girls "didn't read comics."

Nowadays you have just as many female readers and subscribers as male, possibly even more. As someone who is in the group they're targeting I think she's hot. This new story catches my interest, but I can't seem to find issue 600.

So, while it makes sense for the older/older versions of heroines to appear like models, strippers, porn stars, or what ever they've been modeled after, today it's harder to manage that look. Not to mention the number of parental groups who jump on these things. But I think companies like Marvel and DC are trying to appeal to their new audience who is now willing to shop for comics because now it's considered okay.

Not to mention my earlier conversation with Jill about how DC isn't quite up to par with Marvel these days. Their movies are bombing, Batman is, well, batman, and DC is trying to modernize before they fall too far behind.

okay, in order...

Morepleasure's post..."look like a porn star/fight like mike tyson". I like that line. That's pretty good I liked Dark Angel, but Catwoman with Halle Berry was a disaster. I've seen parts of that Rosie O' Donnell movie on cable. As I recall, Dan Aykroyd and Dana Delany were also in it. It was supposed to be about the BDSM culture, but anyone who sat through that movie probably gave up sex for at least six months.

Paulie's post...She's right. The number of women reading comic books has increased quite a bit over the past three years. When I go into Comics Castle I see women in my age group not only reading them, but reading other things besides just the so called "comics for girls". In spite of all the naysayers about the costume change, it seems Wonder Woman #600 is selling very well, which is why you might be having trouble finding it. True, we did discuss previously how it seems Marvel keeps striking it rich at the box office while DC can't seem to do anything but keep making more Superman and Batman movies. After the colossal box office failure of Jonah Hex, things will probably just get worse for DC.

Yeah, I'm not too crazy about the new look. I don't understand why she needs a jacket. She doesn't need a cape, but what can she do with a jacket on all the time?

They should have kept her boots red so they don't blend in with the leggings/tights/whatever.

I will definitely miss the bodice and star-spangled panties. (Mmmmm) And yeah, I think she's a little too young looking.

lol JP Comics sounds wicked.

Jason, I agree with you on the boots. Maybe not red, but not so blendy would be good as well. I'm kind of surprised that they never incorporated the original design into her new design a little bit more.

Maybe her bikini matches her old costume? XD

JP Comics. Jill and Paulie purchase DC Comics from Time Warner and then...and then...and then...I'm not sure the comics world would know what hit them.

I do generally like the new look (after saying that I don't like it so much). But yeah, I understand the criticisms that some people made about how the patriotism and some aspects of the original costume are missing. There are some stars on her jacket, but they should have found a way to work them in a bit more. She doesn't need a million stars like the star-spangled panties, but maybe three clearly visible stars on her hips like piping, or something.

I do like the top. It's more modest than the bodice, but I don't think they need to cover it up with a jacket. Besides, isn't she going to want to take that off when she's punching bad guys?

On the next Project Runway...fashion expert Jason offers his comments and critiques as Batgirl, Black Canary, Wonder Woman, Huntress, Supergirl, Zatanna, Vixen, Dr. Light, and Lady Blackhawk strut their stuff down the runway. Hey maybe I should've posted this over at Jill TV also.

lol See, nowadays we question why or how they fight in a certain costume. The jacket looks restricting, but thanks to the world of comics, it can be a comfortable fighting uniform or costume

lol Jason. It's ok. Just don't forget that it's a comic If they have super powers, fighting in a tight jacket is no problem what so ever.
